1. Precision Cutting: Specialized hand tools are used to deepen and sharpen the aged and damaged checkering patterns on your gunstock. Whether it just needs a quick sharpen or parts have been rubbed smooth, the checkering is executed with precision and artistry, restoring your gunstock’s original pattern.

2. Compatibility with Finishing: While checkering can be done on a finished stock, it is recommended to incorporate it during the refinishing process. This allows optimal results while minimizing the risk of minor nicks and scratches on the surrounding wood. These imperfections are easily eliminated during the sanding phase of refinishing, ensuring a quality final product.

Pricing and Value

The gunstock recheckering service is priced Lines Per square Inch (LPI), with price increasing with LPI.

  • $7 per square inch of 18 LPI checkering

  • $8.50 per square inch of 20 LPI checkering

  • $10 per square inch of 22 LPI checkering

For example: If 28 inches of 18 LPI recheckering are needed, your total price will be 7 × 28 = $196.

Length of Service

The checkering process typically takes 2-4 weeks to complete, especially when coordinated with refinishing.

Step 2: After you click “Add Deposit to Cart” a form will pop up. Within the form, please enter the number of square inches your would like recheckered.

For example: If you have an 18 LPI stock that needs 28 inches of checkering touched up, select LPI 18. Then in the form, specify that 28 inches of recheckering are needed.

You will be charge a $25 deposit, and the remaining ($7 × 28) - 25 = $171 will be invoiced once the service is complete.

Shipping

Shipping a gunstock with no metal parts is generally straightforward because it is not a regulated firearm component under federal law. The main priority is to package the stock properly to prevent damage during transit. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS), UPS, and FedEx can all be used for shipping.

Packaging instructions

  1. Wrap the stock securely: Use foam wrap, bubble wrap, or heavy paper to create a protective cushion around the entire stock. Pay special attention to any delicate areas, like the forend or the comb. For very delicate items, consider double-wrapping or using a plastic bag with a volatile corrosion inhibitor for extra protection against moisture.

  2. Fill voids with packing material: Place the wrapped stock inside a sturdy cardboard box. Fill any empty space with foam peanuts, crumpled paper, or additional foam blocks to prevent the stock from shifting during shipping. The package should be tightly packed, and you should not hear or feel the contents moving when you shake it.

  3. Consider a hard case: For extra protection, you can place the stock in a hard-sided case inside a cardboard box. Some shippers even use PVC pipe with padded ends for maximum security.

  4. Seal the box securely: Use strong, reinforced shipping tape to seal all seams and edges of the box. Do not skimp on the tape.

Labeling and shipping tips

  1. Do not advertise the contents: The box should be unmarked and should not indicate that it contains gun parts.

  2. Purchase insurance: Since gunstocks can be valuable, it's wise to purchase shipping insurance for the full replacement value of the item.

Choose a carrier:

  1. USPS is often considered a flexible and accessible option for shipping gun parts that are not the receiver or frame. You can use a service with tracking and signature confirmation for extra security.

  2. UPS and FedEx can also be used, but keep in mind that their policies regarding "firearm products" can be complex, and some require a Federal Firearms License (FFL) for shipping certain components. For an item that is clearly just a stock with no regulated metal parts, this is less of a concern, but it's always best to check the latest policies.

  3. Document everything: Keep a record of the carrier, tracking number, and insurance details in case you need to file a claim.
