Checkering Process

1. Precision Cutting: Specialized hand tools are used to lay out and deepen your desired checkering pattern on your gunstock. A range of custom checkering patterns are offered which can be tailored to your preferences.

2. Compatibility with Finishing: While checkering can be done on a finished stock, it is recommend to incorporate it during the refinishing process. This allows optimal results while minimizing the risk of minor nicks and scratches on the surrounding wood. These imperfections are easily eliminated during the sanding phase of refinishing, ensuring a quality final product.

Shipping

Shipping a knife is generally straightforward. While knife scales separate from the blade are preferred for checkering services, you may ship the full knife. The main priority is to package properly to prevent injury to workers and damage to other mail. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS), UPS, and FedEx can all be used for shipping.

Packaging instructions

  1. Secure Packaging is Mandatory: The primary rule across all major carriers is that the knife must be packaged to prevent injury to workers and damage to other mail.

  2. Specific Knife Restrictions:

    • Most knives are mailable: Kitchen knives, pocket knives, and hunting knives are generally allowed.

    • Switchblades are heavily restricted: In the U.S., private individuals typically cannot mail switchblade (automatic) knives. Only authorized manufacturers, dealers, and government procurement officers can ship them to specific entities.

  3. Carrier Variations:

    • USPS allows the mailing of most common knives as long as they are packaged securely.

    • FedEx and UPS also allow shipping knives, but may have different internal classifications or handling requirements, especially for international shipments (e.g., recipient may need to be 18+).

  4. International Shipping: Shipping internationally involves additional regulations and restrictions based on the destination country's laws. Some countries explicitly prohibit certain types of knives. You must check the specific destination country's rules before shipping.

Labeling and shipping tips

How to Package Knives Safely

The key is to ensure the blade cannot move, penetrate the packaging, or cause harm.

  1. Protect the Blade:

    • Wrap the blade in a thick material like folded cardboard or bubble wrap and secure it with tape.

    • For fixed-blade knives, use a sheath if available, but consider adding extra padding around the tip and edges.

  2. Cushion the Knife: Place the protected knife inside a sturdy inner container (e.g., a knife box), and fill any voids with crumpled paper, bubble wrap, or foam to prevent it from shifting within the parcel.

  3. Use a Sturdy Outer Box: Use a durable outer shipping box appropriate for the item's size and weight. Tape all flaps securely to prevent the package from opening during transit.

  4. Labeling (Optional but Recommended): Clearly label the package contents as "SHARP EDGED TOOL" or "FIXED BLADE KNIFE" on the customs form (for international) or internally if the carrier requires inspection. This helps ensure proper handling.
